Why the breast is best

We’ve all heard that breast is best when it comes to feeding little ones. But what do health experts mean by that? In today’s blog, we would like to lay explicitly what some of the health benefits are for baby:

  • Baby can more easily digest breast milk. An infant’s body is designed to take in human milk. The baby’s body will digest the protein and fat far more easily when they’re fed from the breast instead of the cow.
  • You’re building your baby’s immune system. That’s right, your milk contains antibiotics that that can help your baby fight infection and boost its burgeoning immune system.
  • Comes preloaded with probiotics. A lot of formulas advertise that they come with prebiotics and probiotics. Your breastmilk has that already.
  • Less spitting up. Breast milk just seems to settle in a baby’s stomach better than formula and cow milk. Breastfed babies are less gassy and spit up far less often.
  • Diapers aren’t as smelly. Stool from a breastfed baby is far less stinky.
  • Diaper rash goes away, for that matter. That less-stinky stool is also far less likely to create a diaper rash.
  • No worries about allergies. While sometimes your baby may be sensitive to something you ate, at least with breast milk, you don’t run the risk that your child reacts badly because he or she is lactose intolerant.
  • Reduces some health conditions. Breastfed babies are less likely to develop conditions such as allergies, asthma or eczema.
  • It encourages good microorganisms. More of these will grow in your infant’s body when you breastfeed, while the harmful ones will decrease.

Here at Jayhawk Pharmacy, we encourage all new moms to give their children breast milk! We also know that feeding them directly from your breast is not always an option. That’s why we carry products such as the Purely Yours Breast Pump and the One Hand Manual Breast Pump.
