Every woman puts on a little bit of extra weight during pregnancy. Now that your child is born, you may be looking forward to getting back down to your pre-pregnancy weight and fitting back into that cute dress!

But wait a minute…

You also plan on breastfeeding, because after all, breast is best! And when you breastfeed, you need to stay both energized and hydrated, since you burn hundreds of calories a day producing and then distributing milk. You need that extra food.

However, with a little bit of smart planning, you can also lose weight while you breastfeed! Here’s how:


Make sure your meals are balanced with the right amount of nutrition. That means evenly spread out your nutrition such as protein, carbs, starches, etc. Try not to eat less than 1800 calories a day—after all, you’re still eating for two!


Many experts recommend light snacking throughout the day, followed by lighter, nutrient-rich meals. This will ensure you have your energy levels and milk supply up throughout the day. Try stocking your house with healthy snacks such as apple slices, baby carrots and wheat crackers.

Super foods

In this instance, we’re referring to foods that are low in calories and fat but high in protein, so they allow you to feel energized and full while still letting you shed those extra pounds. Milk, yogurt, lean meat, chicken, salmon and beans all fall in this category.


You may not feel like doing this, what with the lost sleep, but it will be totally worth it to get up and move! If it is nice out, try taking your newborn out on a walk in their stroller. Squeeze in some aerobics while your infant sleep—trust us, the laundry can wait!
