When you’ve got too much going on, it’s tempting to reach for the energy drink, coffee or other stimulant to keep going. However, not getting enough sleep means you’re robbing your body of some amazing benefits! Studies show that adults who get a solid 8 hours of sleep or more per night can result in the following health dividends:

  • Reduce inflammation – Inflammation is linked to stroke, heart disease, and arthritis. In recent studies, adults who receive less than 6 hours of sleep per night are at an increased risk of having a heart attack. Simply going to bed earlier can reduce inflammation, ultimately improving your overall heart health.

  • Experience less pain – If you suffer from chronic pain or acute pain caused by an injury, getting enough sleep can actually make you hurt less.

  • Mood improvement – Feel less stressed, anxious, and depressed by simply getting enough sleep. Not getting enough sleep can affect your emotional regulation, causing you to negatively react to situations that wouldn’t normally bother you.

  • Lose weight – Obesity in adults has been linked to sleep deprivation. The hormone known as leptin can make you feel full, causing you to eat less. When you do not get enough sleep, your leptin levels will decrease, making you think you’re hungry which in turn causes you to overeat.

  • Stronger immunity – Not only does getting at least 8 hours of sleep per night make you feel better, it can also boost your immune system, making you less susceptible to cold and flu viruses.
