Exercising with limited mobility can be difficult, but these tips can help you out.

It seems like there is a huge group of people every year who make the New Year’s resolutions to get in shape, to exercise more and to eat healthier. Now that we’re into March, most of those people have gotten back into their old habits. For some, exercising is already more difficult because they are living with limited mobility.

Jayhawk Pharmacy is here to provide ideas for those with limited mobility. These are exercises you can do from you wheelchair that will help you get healthier. The best part is you can do many of these exercises in the comfort of your own home.

  • Lift with free weights: You don’t need to spend money on a lot of equipment to get in shape. You can often find a bargain set of free weights that will allow you to do plenty of exercise from your wheelchair or mobility scooter. There are a lot of upper-body exercises that are great for beginners and will help tone-up your muscles. Remember to start slow and use a starting weight that you’re comfortable with. You can always increase the weight or the number of repetitions later.
  • Wheelchair pushups: Maybe you’re not comfortable lifting weights, or perhaps lifting weights is difficult for you. You can still add strength to your arms and chest with wheelchair pushups. Simply lock your brakes and use the arm rests to give yourself stability. Lift yourself off the seat of your chair and slowly lower yourself again. Add more reps as you feel stronger.
  • Get your heart rate up: If you’re looking to add a little cardio, or you prefer to work out with competition, there are still lots of options available to you. If you have a manual wheelchair, wheeling yourself around a track is a great way to add cardio to your workouts. Many communities also feature wheelchair basketball leagues for those looking to work out while playing a team sport.
