Keeping your cholesterol at healthy levels is an important part of staying healthy.

Numbers can be great—they tell you how your favorite team is doing, they tell you if your 401K is any closer to letting you retire and they can tell you how much farther you have to go before you reach that vacation spot during a road trip.

But, one number people don’t want to talk about is their cholesterol. Today we’re going to talk about what you can do to get that number down.

  • Don’t smoke

We think about smoking in terms of our lungs and heart, but did you know that it can also be bad for your cholesterol levels as well? There are a number of smoking cessation products out there if quitting is just too hard.

  • Lots of nice exercise

If the first thing about you is true, then that makes this option a lot harder! Once you stop smoking, it will be easier to exercise. If you don’t smoke, then great! But, daily exercise can still be a chore. That’s why you need to find a routine that you can look forward to—like walking on the trails or dancing. It doesn’t need to be strenuous—moderate exercise every day will do.

  • Good heart food

Once you’re done with your walk (or dance, or bike ride, or whatever) eat some good, heart-healthy food such as whole grains, fish and leafy greens.

  • Weight loss

Once you start doing the other things on this list, this one will become a lot easier, trust us. Even taking off a few pounds is good for your cholesterol levels.

  • Alcohol in moderation

“Moderation” is the key here. A glass of red wine at night can be a good way to get your cholesterol down, but you need to limit your intake to really see health benefits.

Here at Jayhawk Pharmacy, we want to see you age well and age healthfully—that’s why we encourage you to pay attention to this number. We also carry a number of products to help you age in-home.
