Whether you’re a new mom or you already have children, every baby is different when it comes to breastfeeding.

It’s Mommy Monday, and for today’s topic, we here at Jayhawk Pharmacy would like to talk a little bit about breast-feeding.

There are many health benefits to breastfeeding, as well as emotional ones. But, what do you do when that little one just refuses to breastfeed? Below are a few tips for the reluctant nursers:

  • Practicing latching. This can be done with the breast or even with a finger dipped in warm milk. Warning, though: don’t practice for more than ten minutes, or less if the baby is resistant. Forcing it for too long can have the opposite effect, and make baby averse to your breast.
  • If frustration builds up, either on yours or the baby’s end, make sure you take a step back and let things cool off for a bit.
  • Try giving the baby an appetizer from a bottle before nursing. If the baby is cranky from hunger, he or she will have less patience to work on breastfeeding.
  • Sometimes, offering the baby a chance to nurse even when they are not hungry helps; this is comfort feeing, and you can move to regular feeding from there.
  • Make sure you are getting lots of skin-to-skin contact with your child, even if they are not nursing; this makes the act of breastfeeding feel normal to them after a while.
  • No matter what goes on with breastfeeding, make sure you are still feeding your baby. Some are tempted into starving the stubbornness out of their babies, but this is a bad idea. Pump your own milk to have on hand, or else have some formula you can give.

Jayhawk Pharmacy is here to provide mothers with resources to help them. We offer electric and manual breast pumps that give you flexibility and are easy to use. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to contact us.
