The Breastfeeding Student: What You Should Know

Posted on: August 2nd, 2016 by JayHawkPharmacyBlogger

If you’re breastfeeding and returning to school in a few weeks, you may be wondering how you’re going to be able to pump between classes. With the proper planning, you can continue to offer breastmilk to your child throughout the fall semester. Jayhawk Pharmacy would like to share some tips and tricks on how to prepare to breastfeed during your collegiate years.

Where are you most comfortable pumping? Would you rather find a quiet room on campus, or are you fine with grabbing a bench and pumping in the halls or outside? Remember, if you’re feeling tense while pumping, you may not produce as much milk, so do what’s comfortable for you.  If you’re on a smaller campus, you might have enough time to walk to your car and pump there. Just keep in mind that most breast pumps are not silent, so designated study areas may not be ideal.

Set up a schedule for pumping. Once you’ve identified the places on campus you feel most comfortable pumping, you may need to change your class schedule so that you have enough time to get to them and still pump.  Depending on your major and how full your classes are, this may not always be feasible. In any case, practice walking from class to class before the semester starts, so you know exactly how much time to allot yourself.

Invest in a portable cooler. Determine where you can store your milk on campus while you’re in class. Whether it’s in a cooled lunch bag or community fridge, you’ll need to keep your breastmilk fresh.

Change the times you normally pump.  If pumping on campus is just not going to work out, condition your body to a schedule that works. You can do this by changing the times when you pump or breastfeed and doing it fewer times throughout the day. This will train your body to produce breastmilk at certain times—such as when you’re home. However, this method may affect the amount of breastmilk your body produces overall.
