Bathrooms can be hazardous for anyone at any age, what with their slippery surfaces and the opportunity for water to spill everywhere. However, they can be especially hazardous for senior citizens. According to the Center for Disease Control, a third of all seniors experience at least one fall every year. The bathroom is an all-too-common place where this occurs. In order to help your loved one maintain independence, Jayhawk Pharmacy would like to offer these bathroom safety tips:

  • Towel racks are not handrails, and can come out of the wall easily. Make sure you install actual handrails in key locations, such as right outside of the shower and next to the toilet.
  • Get rid of the shower door and replace it with a shower curtain—especially if it’s on a rack. These can be cumbersome to open and close, and can become even more hazardous if a fall occurs within a shower.
  • Place suction-grip bath mats in the shower to cut back on the likelihood of slipping on a wet surface.
  • Eliminate throw rugs, as these can be a tripping hazard
  • Install a nightlight so it’s easy to maneuver in the bathroom after it gets dark out
  • A raised-height toilet seat can cut back on the impact of a sudden fall.
  • A shower chair can do wonders for a senior who has a history of falls or weaker legs. It means they won’t have to put stress on their legs as they bathe.
  • Install a hand-held shower wand that can pause the flow of water is very handy for a senior who does need to sit down when they bathe.

Here at Jayhawk Pharmacy, we understand how important it is to stay safe, healthy and independent. That’s why we offer and array of bathroom safety supplies.
