Thousands of seniors are injured in falls every year. Don’t become a statistic.

There are a few things in life that are just generally accepted as truths, with one of them being that we are all going to get older.  It is just a fact of life.  As people age, they start to lose mobility, some more rapidly than others, which can lead to everyday tasks being much more difficult than they once were. Not only can these tasks be more difficult, but they can also lead to some serious health risks due to accidents.  When it comes to mobility accessories, the bathroom is one of the most focused on areas in the house.  In this two-part post, we will discuss the dangers of falls and some products that can help prevent them.

Here are some eye-catching statistics to think about:

Falls account for 25% of all hospital admissions, and 40% of all nursing home admissions.

The transition from independent living to any assisted living or long-term care is typically a difficult one for people because they don’t enjoy feeling like they are losing independence.

55% of all falls take place inside the home.

A lot of people think slippery sidewalks or steps are the main culprits of falls, however it is actually falls within the home (i.e. tripping while walking, slippery bathroom floors, door frames, etc…) that cause the most damage.

Treatment for hip fractures typically includes surgery and hospitalization, usually for about one week, and is frequently followed by admission to a nursing home and extensive rehabilitation.

Extensive rehabilitation can typically take upwards of six months or more. These usually require at least one visit per week to a physical therapist, plus daily exercises to be done at home.

The main inconsistency that blurs the accuracy of these statistics is that not all falls are reported.  If you have an elderly loved one that still lives at home, make sure to educate yourself on fall prevention and what to do if a fall occurs.  Be sure to check out our product catalog at Jayhawk Pharmacy for your mobility and bathroom safety related products.  Or call us at 1-785-228-9700.
