Staying active is an important part of being healthy, but there are some things you should if your starting to exercise in your golden years.

Here at Jayhawk Pharmacy, we’re all about helping people age in-home. One of the biggest things that can help you do so is if you stay active in your Golden Years. Since September is Active Aging Month, we thought we would touch on that in today’s blog. Below are a few ways you can keep yourself moving:

Find what works for you

This might mean a little bit of self-discovery. For example, are you a lone wolf when it comes to exercise, or do you like working out with a class? Or, do you like having one-on-one time and exercising with a buddy? This also means finding the time of day when you get the best workout in and whether you like an indoor or outdoor workout.

Don’t overdo it

It’s really easy to get overly eager when you’re starting a new hobby or activity, and the same is true for a daily workout routine. Unfortunately, this can also mean that you end up overdoing it. Listen to your body; if it hurts, don’t do it!

Involve friends and family

Tell your friends and family about your new commitment to staying active, and have them keep you accountable. Or, you could ask one of them to join you in your fitness journey. That will also motivate you to continue to stay active.

Make attainable goals

This could be something like, “Every day I will ride the stationary bike while watching the morning talk show” or “I will use the medicine ball ten times in the morning and ten times in the evening.” Start out slow, and then build on that.

Just remember, it is possible to stay active and healthy well into your retirement years. If you’ve been retired for a while, it’s not too late to start! No matter what shape you’re in, there’s always something you can do for your health.
