5 Ways to Reduce Your Chances of Developing Alzheimer’s

Posted on: June 21st, 2017 by JayHawkPharmacyBlogger

It’s estimated that 5.5 million Americans live with Alzheimer’s, and that 1 in 10 adults over the age of 65 will develop this condition. While there is no known cure, there are a number of things that you can do to reduce your chances of developing it. Since June is Alzheimer’s Awareness Month, Jayhawk Pharmacy would like to offer you the following tips:

Stay educated! Formal education at any stage of life can help keep your brain mentally fit. Consider taking a class at a local community college in a subject you have always wanted to learn more about or check out what seasonal classes are being offered in your community center.

Take care of your heart! We understand that high blood pressure and diabetes can directly affect our hearts, but they can also affect our brains. If you keep your heart healthy, then you are also keeping your brain healthy.

Catch some ZZZ’s! If you are not getting enough sleep at night, you may be suffering from insomnia or sleep apnea. Feeling tired and not getting enough sleep can result in reduced memory function and thinking. If you think you have a sleep-related condition such as sleep apnea, consult your physician. Treatments such as CPAP machines are available to ensure you get a good night’s sleep!

Buddy Up! Spending time socializing and engaging with friends can help keep you mentally sharp. In fact, staying social with not only your friends, but also within the community can keep your brain active and happy.

Get Stumped! Regularly challenge yourself with a variety of mind puzzles, such as crosswords or Sudoku. These days, you can find just about any game in the form of an app for your mobile device, so take advantage of downtime by playing some challenging mental games.

As always, maintaining a healthy diet and getting regular exercise are also very beneficial when preventing cognitive disorders. Jayhawk Pharmacy hopes these tips give your brain a boost and feel free to visit us today!
