4 Common Questions Moms Have About Newborn Screening

Posted on: September 25th, 2016 by JayHawkPharmacyBlogger

Your baby will be here before you know it! There are just so many things to get done before your bundle of joy arrives. One thing you may not have thought of yet is the newborn screening, which is the first set of tests your doctor will run on your baby.  Jayhawk Pharmacy answers the top 4 questions women have about this process:

  • Why is this done?

Every state in the U.S. mandates that newborns have this test done. This is so they can catch any conditions early on that may impact your child’s health. For example, some genetic conditions could affect how your baby’s body processes nutrients. By catching it early, you can make sure your baby leads a happy, healthy life!

  • What do I need to do?

If you have your child in the hospital, they will perform the screening shortly after birth. Should you opt for a home birth, find out from your midwife or doula if he or she is qualified to perform the screening. If not, your family practitioner should be able to do it, but make sure they can see you within the first 24 to 48 hours after your baby’s birth.

  • What should I expect?

The screening procedure is fairly simple. The doctor or nurse will prick the bottom of your baby’s foot and collect a small blood sample. That sample is then sent to a laboratory, where it’s tested for a number of different things. If it comes back positive, your doctor will call you to discuss the results and treatment options.

  • Which disorders are they screening for?

At the minimum, all states requires that your newborn be screened for the disorders recommended by the Secretary of Health and Human Services’ Advisory Committee on Heritable Disorders in Newborns and Children (SACHDNC). Some states mandate more than that, and you can find out what our state requires here. Additionally, your health provider may screen for more than the state-required tests.
